Ultra-light 1k carbon fabric at only 68 g/m² – for high-strength, exceptionally thin CFRP laminates and demanding lightweight structures.
Style 493 is manufactured from fine TORAYCA® T300B 1k carbon fibre yarn. The balanced plain weave with 5 × 5 threads/cm produces a fine, stable fabric structure and allows calculated laminate plies of only approx. 0.11 mm thickness. Ideal for model construction, lightweight sandwich structures and components where every gram counts.
MATERIAL ACCORDING TO AVIATION STANDARD
Style 493 carbon fabric, with an areal weight of only 68 g/m², is one of the particularly lightweight conventional woven carbon fabrics. It is manufactured from high-quality TORAYCA® T300B carbon fibre yarn with a linear density of 67 tex and 1,000 filaments per fibre bundle (1k).
The fine 1k yarns allow a very thin laminate build-up and produce a correspondingly fine fabric structure. Warp and weft each contain 5 threads/cm, resulting in a symmetrical fabric construction with uniform fibre distribution in both principal directions.
The low areal weight allows the reinforcement to be applied in very fine increments. This is a significant advantage for lightweight sandwich components, thin CFRP shells and model structures where high specific strength and stiffness are required at the lowest possible weight.

Benefits of the Fabric
- extremely low areal weight of only 68 g/m²
- fine TORAYCA® T300B 1k carbon fibre yarn
- allows very thin CFRP laminate plies
- symmetrical fibre distribution in warp and weft
- stable plain weave for precise cutting and positioning
- ideal for demanding lightweight and sandwich structures
Applications
Style 493 is particularly suitable for lightweight, highly loaded CFRP structures where the reinforcement needs to be as thin as possible. With a calculated laminate thickness of only approx. 0.11 mm per ply, wall thicknesses and local reinforcements can be adjusted in very fine increments.
The low areal weight makes the fabric particularly attractive for lightweight shells and sandwich components. Facing plies can be produced at low weight, while the carbon fibres provide high specific mechanical properties.
Typical applications:
- aircraft and model construction
- lightweight CFRP shells and fairings
- sandwich components
- high-strength thin facing plies
- weight-sensitive sports equipment
- lightweight technical CFRP components
- local reinforcements with minimal additional thickness
Suitable Resin Systems
Suitable low-viscosity epoxy laminating resin systems are recommended for high-quality CFRP laminates. They allow uniform wet-out of the fine 1k fibre bundles and support a compact, uniform laminate structure.
For aviation applications, the specified or approved resin system, the prescribed laminate lay-up and the corresponding processing, curing and documentation requirements must be observed.
Calculated Data for Hand Lay-Up Laminates with 35 Vol.-% Fibre Content
| Resin consumption | approx. 82 g/m² |
| Laminate thickness | approx. 0.11 mm |
| Laminate weight | approx. 150 g/m² |
Benefits of the 100 cm Width
The 100 cm width provides a good balance between area coverage and controlled handling for a lightweight 68 g/m² 1k fabric. It allows larger continuous cut pieces while remaining easy to control when positioning the very lightweight fabric.
Technical Notes
Plain weave
The regular 1/1 interlacing of warp and weft yarns gives the very lightweight fabric a comparatively stable structure and good resistance to yarn displacement. This allows clean cutting and low-distortion positioning.
Fine 1k yarn
TORAYCA® T300B with a linear density of 67 tex consists of 1,000 individual filaments per fibre bundle. This enables the production of the very fine 68 g/m² fabric and particularly thin CFRP laminate plies.
Fibre distribution
With identical yarn and 5.0 threads/cm in both warp and weft, Style 493 has a symmetrical fabric construction with uniform reinforcement in both principal directions.
Handling
Very lightweight carbon fabrics should be handled carefully during cutting and lay-up. A clean cutting surface and controlled positioning help minimise yarn displacement and distortion.
Aviation applications
The fabric is designated as material according to aviation standard. For the finished component, the specified resin system, the prescribed laminate lay-up and the applicable processing, approval and documentation requirements must also be observed.
